Igbo Day Celebration

The Igbo name is ascribed to the “Ala-Igbo, Ani-Igbo, Ibo and Ndi-Igbo”, it is an Ethnonym.
The Igbo people before the European colonization were not unified under a single cultural identity or political framework. Although they started unifying due to expansion, trade, migration, war and conquest. Villages in the Igbo people were generally identified by their ancestral founders such as Umuleri, Nri,
Ogidi, Nnobi, Orlu, Ngwa, Ezza and Ohafia.
The Igbo is the second largest language in Nigeria. The Igbo people can be divided into five geographical based subcultures: Northern Igbo, Southern Igbo, Western Igbo, Eastern Igbo and North-East Igbo. These groups are also divided into subgroups based on their location and names.

NOTHERN IGBO:

·        Nri-Awka of Onitsha
·        Enugu of Nsukka
·        Udi
·        Awgu and Okigwe

SOUTHERN IGBO

·        Isu-ama of Okigwe
·        Orlu
·        Oratta Ikwere of Owerri
·        Ahoada
·        Ohuhu-Ngwa of Abba and Bende
·        Isu-Hem of Bende and Okigwe

THE WESTERN IGBO:

·        Ogwashi-Uku and Agbor
·        Southern Ika (Kwale)
·        The Riverrain
·        Onitsha

THE EASTERN

·        Afikpo
·        Abam-Ohafia
·        Aro

NORTH-EASTERN IGBO

·        Ogu Uku of Abakiliki and Afikpo
The Igbo presently constitute: Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi states and Ahoada of Rivers state.

OCCUPATION

The ancient Igbo people’s major occupations are: Farming, Blacksmiths, Wood carving, Pottery and Cloth weaving

 DANCE

The Igbo people have different dance which they dance on different occasion for different purpose, these include:
Ikpirikpi-ogu: This dance is performed to welcome soldiers’ home after they fought tribal wars. It is only performed by men.
Nka-umu Agbogho: Is a dance performed by young women who were ready to marry.
Mmamwu is a dance for masquerades.
Omunu- Onwa is a dance performed by married women and new mothers.

TABOOS 

·        You don’t kill or eat python in Igbo land as they believe them to be their ancestral fathers who have reincarnated.
·        Committing Suicide is seen as a taboo.
·        Fornicating is a taboo in the Igbo land.
·        A woman blessing a Kolanut is taboo.
·        Using your left hand to do anything is a taboo in Igbo land.
·        Committing Incest is a taboo.
·        Whistling at night is a taboo because is an act considered to be calling snakes.

·        Ofe Onugbo (Bitter leaf Soup)
·        Oha soup
·        Egusi and Ogbono

FESTIVALS

·        New yam festival
·        Mmanwu (Masquerade) festival
·        Week of Peace (Igbo day)
The Igbo people also celebrates the major national holidays like the Christmas, Easter etc
